COMPANY PROFILE
Founded 25 years ago by Jan Rofekamp, Films Transit International is one of the longest running, renowned and respected international sales agencies of quality documentaries with offices in Montreal and in New York. We specialize in the worldwide release and marketing of high profile, theatrical and TV documentaries in two specific genres:
ARTS, SPORTS & CULTURE, which include all our documentaries about Arts, Culture, Biography, Cinema and Music and the latest, some wild stuff on sports!
SOCIETY, HISTORY & POLITICS, which include all our documentaries about Current Affairs, Society, Politics, Human Interest and History
We strongly believe that major festival exposure adds prestige to a film's international career.
Many of our films are selected for the major film (launch pad) festivals, such as IDFA, Sundance, Berlin and Toronto and win prestigious awards. Each year we take on between 20-25 new films. Our entire catalogue comprises of about a total of around 150 titles and try to keep our catalogue to this size, so we can keep it active, stay focused and give the films a serious shelve live. You should see us as a Haute Couture Documentary Boutique: we do not have many pieces, but they are all great quality, well made and well looked after.
MARKET INTEREST:
Films Transit International is generally looking for two types of documentaries:
First there are the EPIC feature docs, generally with more cultural rather than social-political subjects. These are the films on LARGE international subject matters and often have a strong author signature. They can be historical and contemporary and MUST have a very high quality level of filmmaking and tell a story that everyone in the world can relate to. For each of these EPIC films we strive to create a worldwide festival launch at a major international film festival, and with the filmmaker we develop an international festival roadmap for about a year after its release before selling them to the FIRST market for television. Some of these documentaries will also have a career in the cinema in selected countries and be released on DVD. Since about a year we are talking to several on-line platforms as we know that the traditional markets do not reach the millions people worldwide interested in the subjects our films carry. On-line is the way to the future.
SOME PAST EXAMPLES OF EPIC DOCS ARE:
FORGETTING DAD, INFINITE SPACE, THE RECKONING, STEALING KLIMT, THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN, A PROMISE TO THE DEAD, THE CHAMPAGNE SPY, KZ, THE CORPORATION, MANUFACTURING CONSENT, WAR PHOTOGRAPHER, OUTFOXED. Rock docs like AMERICAN HARDCORE, METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER, END OF THE CENTURY: THE STORY OF THE RAMONES and Classics like CRUMB, THE CELLULOID CLOSET and the THE WONDERFUL, HORRIBLE LIFE OF LENI RIEFENSTAHL.
Secondly, we are looking for what will be referred to as URGENT docs. These are generally TV Hour length films on very strong, edgy, provocative, contemporary subject matters that we feel people MUST see because of their political or social relevance. Some of the urgent films we handle have strong current affairs value.
EXAMPLES ARE:
BLACK WAVE, PORN-DEMIC, WEB WARRIORS, ADDICTED TO PLASTIC, THE NUCLEAR COMEBACK, SATELLITE QUEENS, DEVILS BARGAIN, THE ONE PERCENT, FULL BATTLE RATTLE, JIMMY CARTER MAN FROM PLAINS, LA CORONA and some of the older ones
FROM DUST, MY COUNTRY, MY COUNTRY, THE UNGRATEFUL DEAD, OUR BRAND IS CRISIS, CHINA BLUE, STATE OF FEAR, POWER TRIP, MY FLESH & BLOOD, THESE GIRLS, BELFAST GIRLS, THIN ICE, SHERIFF, YOGA INC.
We also continue to be interested in all types of (timeless) documentaries on Cinema like IMAGINARY WITNESS: HOLLYWOOD AND THE HOLOCAUST or STARDUST: THE BETTE DAVIS STORY and smart docs on Sex such as STILL DOING IT: THE INTIMATE LIVES OF WOMEN OVER 65, BREASTS and the Entertainment Industry: such as DOUBLE IDENTITY, BEHIND THE COUCH: CASTING IN HOLLYWOOD.
And we occasionally represent exceptional documentary mini-series, such as A LION IN THE HOUSE.
We just re-released the classic THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK and when Jodie Foster has made her film about Leni Riefenstahl, we will pull off the shelve the masterpiece: THE WONDERFUL HORRIBLE LIFE OF LENI RIEFENSTAHL in 2010.
NOT INTERESTED IN:
Science, sports, wildlife, factual entertainment, and programs with a very specific national or local content. We generally do NOT take on documentaries or documentary series that are shorter than 45 minutes.
More examples per category, as well as festival, award and other information, can be found on our website.
