Each year we take on between 20-25 new films, half of which are launched in the spring around MIP TV and the other half in the fall around MIP COM. We represent a total of around 125 titles and try to keep our catalogue to this size, so we can keep it active, stay focused and give the films a serious shelve live. You should see us as a Haute Couture Documentary Boutique: we do not have many pieces, but they are all great quality, well made and well looked after.
The primary market for documentaries has been and continues to be the TV market. Around 80% of the sales we do worldwide are broadcast sales in all its different forms. About 20% of the films we handle have sales in the world of theatrical and video.
The US market tends to have slightly more sales potential in theatrical and video. About 50 countries worldwide buy documentaries, these are usually the countries where there is some sort of public broadcast history. All of them can buy TV hours (anywhere between 45 and 58 minutes, but usually 52 minutes.) Only 14 or so countries have feature length slots varying from 1 a month to 1 a week, so this is a relatively small market in relation to all the films on the market.
Our client list consists of 1500 clients; TV buyers (public, commercial, private channels) and theatrical, non-theatrical, educational, home video distributors, Internet, and also airlines. We deal actively with 30% to 40% of them, as many clients are interested in specific subject matters and types of films. Each year we make about 1500 actions worldwide (pending situations, sales, refusals). 1400 DVD screeners were sent out in the last year, resulting in about 365 sales. So 25% of our actions result in a sale. The average performance is about 10 sales per film. Our best seller has sold 50 times!
All information on the films can be accessed via our website as well as festival, awards, and other information. Our films can be accessed by category, subject, or title. Yearly we have about 600,000 hits on our website. And millions of people around the world get to see the films we handle!
